# Effleurage

Effleurage is a massage technique made up of smooth, gliding strokes along the body. It is commonly associated with Swedish massage. The word names a type of hand movement, not a separate medical treatment, and gentle-looking strokes still need to suit the person receiving them.

## What it is

During effleurage, the therapist moves a hand or hands across an area rather than repeatedly lifting and squeezing the tissues. A clinical overview in BMJ describes it as gentle stroking along a muscle. It differs from kneading, focused sustained pressure on a tender point, or tapping movements.

The name alone does not tell you the exact pressure, speed or area being worked on. Ask the therapist what they mean in your session. You do not need to know the French terminology to explain that you prefer slow gliding strokes instead of more concentrated work.

## What to expect

You may notice broad, continuous contact instead of pressure held in one small spot. Oil or lotion may be used to reduce skin friction. Tell the therapist about product allergies and whether a stroke feels soothing, irritating or too intense. 'Slower and lighter, please' is a practical request; you do not have to wait until the therapist finishes an area.

Effleurage can be one component of a mixed massage session rather than the whole appointment. Ask how much of the session will involve gliding and whether other techniques are planned. Agree on areas to avoid and say if you would prefer an explanation before a change in technique.

Some people find massage relaxing, but general massage research does not prove that this one stroke produces a particular result for everyone. Do not interpret a pleasant sensation as evidence that circulation problems, swelling or an injury have been corrected. There is no need to seek bruising or discomfort as proof of useful work, and persistent symptoms deserve assessment beyond the massage room.

## At Healing Hands

Healing Hands' official massage page discusses Swedish massage within its service approach and encourages a conversation about preferences before the session. Effleurage is useful vocabulary for that discussion; the page does not establish it as a separately bookable service.

If you want a gentler experience, describe the feeling you want: 'I prefer broad, smooth strokes and do not want concentrated pressure today.' Ask the therapist whether that approach fits your situation. Do not assume that a named technique, or an enhancement mentioned on the website, must be included regardless of your comfort or health restrictions.

## Safety and when to seek care

A light technique is not automatically appropriate over every painful or swollen area. Discuss recent surgery, injury, fragile bones, bleeding risks and blood-thinning medicines before booking. Avoid pressure on broken or healing skin, and seek individual guidance for areas with reduced sensation. Massage should not delay evaluation of an unexplained problem.

Stop if touch causes sharp pain, burning or new tingling. New limb swelling with warmth, redness or tenderness needs prompt medical assessment, not repeated stroking to try to move the swelling. Difficulty breathing or chest pain needs emergency care. If discomfort persists or worsens after a session, contact a healthcare professional instead of assuming that a stronger massage is the next step.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is effleurage the same as Swedish massage?

No. Swedish massage is a broader massage approach; effleurage is one technique that may be used within it. Naming the stroke helps describe what you like, but it does not specify the complete session.
### Is effleurage the same as manual lymphatic drainage?

No. A gliding massage stroke should not be treated as interchangeable with a specialised lymphatic approach. Unexplained swelling needs medical assessment, and any condition-specific care should follow the guidance of your treating clinician.
### Can I request effleurage without deep pressure?

Explain that you want light, comfortable gliding strokes and ask whether the therapist can adapt the session accordingly. Keep giving feedback: the technique's name is less important than how the touch feels and whether it remains appropriate for you.
