# Petrissage

Petrissage is a family of massage movements that knead, lift or roll soft tissue. It is commonly used within Swedish massage rather than being a complete massage style on its own. Knowing the term can help you describe the kind of touch you prefer, but it does not determine how much pressure is appropriate.

## What it is

Think of a rhythmic kneading movement rather than a hand gliding continuously across the skin. Depending on the area, the therapist may gently gather and release tissue or use alternating hands to work a muscular region. Clinical massage literature describes petrissage as kneading, including lifting and rolling movements.

It differs from effleurage, which uses smooth strokes along an area, and from tapotement, which uses repeated tapping. These movements can appear in the same appointment. Petrissage is also not another name for deep tissue massage: a technique and an overall treatment approach are different ways of describing a session.

## What to expect

You may feel a repeated squeeze-and-release sensation instead of pressure held on one precise point. Before work begins, explain whether you prefer light contact or a firmer sensation, and identify any areas you do not want touched. Ask the therapist to describe a movement if the terminology is unfamiliar.

Comfort matters more than matching someone else's pressure preference. Say 'less squeezing' or 'please use broader strokes instead' if that describes what you need. You can request a pause without waiting for the end of the session. A feeling of skin pinching or escalating pain is useful feedback, not something you must endure.

Massage may support relaxation or temporary symptom relief for some people, but evidence varies by condition. Research on a whole massage session does not establish which individual stroke produced a change. Kneading should not be presented as a way to permanently remove a lump, repair an injury or resolve the cause of persistent pain. A new or unexplained lump needs clinical assessment rather than repeated massage.

## At Healing Hands

Healing Hands' official massage page discusses Swedish massage and encourages clients to speak with their therapist about preferences before a session. Petrissage is useful vocabulary for that conversation; the page does not identify it as a separate appointment category.

Try a practical request: 'I like gentle kneading around my shoulders, but please avoid pinching and check the pressure with me.' Ask whether that approach is suitable given your history. Confirm the current service options with your chosen location instead of assuming every technique is automatically included or appropriate.

## Safety and when to seek care

Discuss bleeding disorders, blood-thinning medication, severe osteoporosis, recent fractures or a recent blood clot with a healthcare professional before massage. Tell the therapist about surgery, injuries and areas with altered sensation. Pressure should not be applied over healing wounds, and medical restrictions take priority over a preferred technique.

Stop for sharp pain, burning or new numbness. New one-sided swelling with warmth, redness or tenderness needs prompt medical assessment, not kneading. Chest pain or difficulty breathing requires emergency care. Persistent or worsening symptoms after a massage deserve professional advice; do not assume more force will solve the problem.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does petrissage have to be deep or painful?

No. The term describes a movement, not a required intensity. Tell the therapist how it feels and ask for an adjustment or a different technique. Severe pain is not an acceptable measure of a useful massage.
### Is petrissage the same as working on a trigger point?

No. Petrissage usually describes rhythmic kneading over tissue, while trigger-point work is more focused on a particular tender area. Tell the therapist your goal rather than assuming either technique explains why an area hurts.
### Can I ask for gliding strokes instead?

Yes. Explain that you prefer smooth contact to lifting or squeezing. Ask how the therapist can adapt the session, and keep giving feedback if your preference changes while an area is being worked on.
