# Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage is massage adapted for pregnancy, with attention to positioning, pressure and your health history. It can offer a comfortable break and support relaxation, but it does not replace prenatal care or make every pregnancy symptom safe to massage.

## What it is

Pregnancy changes what feels comfortable on a massage table. A prenatal session adjusts the usual approach rather than simply adding a pregnancy label to deep tissue work. A therapist trained in pregnancy massage considers your stage of pregnancy, symptoms, support needs and any guidance from your maternity clinician.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends side-lying positioning for massage during pregnancy. Pillows or bolsters can support the body. The goal is comfortable, gentle work rather than painful pressure or forceful stretching. Tell the therapist you are pregnant even if it is not yet visible. Your ability to change position, request lighter touch and decline an area remains important throughout the appointment.

## What to expect

Before booking, ask your obstetric clinician or midwife whether massage is suitable for your circumstances. Share pregnancy complications, medicines, recent symptoms and any restrictions with the therapist. Ask about pregnancy-specific training, positioning, pressure and the provider's booking policy. A general massage appointment should not be assumed to include these adaptations.

A session may focus on comfort in areas such as the shoulders or back, using a gentler approach. Possible relaxation or relief of ordinary discomfort is not a promise of better birth outcomes, a healthier baby or treatment for anxiety, hypertension or swelling. Any benefit can vary in strength and duration.

Pregnancy providers and massage practices may have different timing policies, especially early in pregnancy. Ask about yours instead of treating a particular week as a universal safety threshold. Medical approval should address your own health, not just how many weeks pregnant you are. Do not use massage to try to start labor.

Comfort is an ongoing conversation: tell the therapist if you feel breathless, dizzy, overheated or unable to settle in the supported position. There is no need to continue simply because a session has started.

## At Healing Hands

Healing Hands' official website describes customized therapeutic massage, but its inspected massage page does not confirm a dedicated prenatal service or pregnancy-specific qualifications. Contact the team before booking to ask whether an appropriately trained therapist and suitable positioning are available for your stage of pregnancy. The general All-Inclusive Massage description should not be read as approval for every enhancement during pregnancy. Share your clinician's advice and confirm the proposed session separately.

## Safety and when to seek care

Pregnancy complications or a history of blood clots require an individualized discussion with your maternity clinician before massage. Avoid deep pressure on the abdomen and do not massage an unexplained painful or swollen leg. New symptoms should be assessed, not dismissed as normal pregnancy aches.

CDC advises immediate medical care for warning signs including a severe or worsening headache, vision changes, fainting, trouble breathing, chest pain, severe ongoing abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding or fluid leakage, reduced fetal movement, or severe limb swelling, redness or pain. Tell the care team that you are pregnant. For chest pain, serious breathing difficulty or collapse, call emergency services. Cancel the massage and seek care rather than waiting for an appointment to see whether touch helps. This list is not exhaustive; contact your maternity team if something feels wrong.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is prenatal massage the same as a regular massage?

No. Pregnancy-specific screening, supported positioning and appropriate pressure matter. Ask whether the therapist has relevant training and whether the practice can accommodate your needs. Your usual massage style or preferred intensity may not be appropriate during pregnancy.
### Can I book during the first trimester?

Ask your maternity clinician and the massage provider. Policies differ, and a calendar week alone does not establish suitability. Mention symptoms and pregnancy history rather than assuming early pregnancy is either automatically safe or automatically unsafe for everyone.
### Can prenatal massage reduce swollen legs?

Do not book it as treatment for unexplained swelling. Sudden, severe or one-sided swelling, especially with pain, warmth or redness, needs medical assessment. Even ordinary discomfort should be discussed with your clinician before choosing hands-on care; a comforting session is not a clot evaluation.
