# Static Cupping Static cupping means placing suction cups on selected areas of skin and leaving them in position rather than sliding them. It describes how the cups are used, not proof that a medical problem has been treated. The expected skin effects, suction and reasons for choosing the technique should be explained before you agree. ## What it is A cup creates negative pressure that draws the skin upward. In a static approach, the cup stays at the selected site for part of the session. This differs from dynamic cupping, where the practitioner moves a cup across the skin. Neither label specifies an appropriate suction strength or duration for an individual. Static and dry are not identical descriptions. Static refers to position; dry cupping means the skin is not pierced. Wet cupping involves skin puncture and is a different procedure. Ask exactly what is proposed rather than assuming a familiar name explains every part of the appointment. ## What to expect You may notice a pulling sensation and visible circular marks after the cups are removed. Ask which areas will be treated, what equipment will be used, how it is cleaned, and how to request a pause. Explain any skin sensitivities or concerns about visible marks before starting. You can decline cupping or ask for ordinary massage instead. Stronger suction, longer contact and darker marks should not be treated as targets. Tell the practitioner immediately if the sensation becomes painful, burning or otherwise uncomfortable. You do not need to continue because a cup has already been placed. NCCIH describes the evidence for pain relief from cupping as weak and notes that high-quality evidence for other conditions is insufficient. That does not establish that one static session will help your symptoms. A change in comfort does not demonstrate injury repair, toxin removal or resolution of an underlying cause. Persistent symptoms still deserve an appropriate clinical assessment. ## At Healing Hands Healing Hands' official massage page contrasts stationary cupping with its lymphatic-cupping approach, which uses slowly moving cups. That comparison explains the terminology but does not by itself confirm a separately bookable static-cupping service at every location. Ask the team which cupping approach is available and how it fits your preferences and health history. A useful enquiry is: 'I want to understand the difference between cups left in place and moving cups before choosing.' Do not assume every enhancement mentioned online is necessary or appropriate for your appointment. ## Safety and when to seek care Cupping can cause skin discoloration, scarring, burns or infection and can aggravate eczema or psoriasis. Discuss active skin problems and ask about hygiene before proceeding. Seek medical guidance first if you have bleeding risks, take blood-thinning medicines, or have a condition that makes skin injury more concerning. Stop for pain, burning or skin damage. Blistering, worsening redness, discharge or increasing pain after a session needs medical advice rather than more suction. New limb swelling, warmth, redness or unexplained tenderness needs prompt assessment; chest pain or difficulty breathing requires emergency help. Cupping should not delay medical care. ## Frequently asked questions ### Do darker marks mean a better result? No. Mark colour should not be used as a score for success or toxin removal. Discuss possible marks beforehand, and tell a healthcare professional about recent cupping if the skin changes are being examined. ### Is static cupping the same as dry cupping? No. Static describes a cup remaining in one position. Dry describes a procedure without skin puncture. Ask the practitioner to explain both the positioning and whether the proposed procedure involves any skin breaking. ### Can I choose massage without cups? Tell the team you do not want suction and ask about a session adapted to that preference. You can also change your mind during the appointment. Agreeing to massage does not mean agreeing to every possible enhancement. ## Related terms - [Dynamic Cupping](/glossary/dynamic-cupping) - [Massage Compression](/glossary/massage-compression) - [Relaxation Massage](/glossary/relaxation-massage) ## References - [Healing Hands: Massage and stationary-cupping comparison](https://healing-hands.us/services/massage/) - [NCCIH: Cupping evidence, methods and risks](https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/cupping) - [Mayo Clinic: Massage precautions](https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/massage-therapy/about/pac-20384595) - [CDC: Blood clot warning signs](https://www.cdc.gov/blood-clots/about/) ## Navigation - [Browse glossary](https://ai.healing-hands.us/glossary) ## Related glossary guides ### What Is Dynamic Lymphatic Cupping and How Is It Different from Static Cupping?
