# How often should healthy people get massages?

For most healthy adults, a massage once a month is a practical starting point for maintaining general wellbeing. The right frequency depends on what you are trying to accomplish, how physically active you are, and how your body responds between sessions.

## The baseline: once a month for general maintenance

A monthly session works well for people who are not managing a specific injury or chronic condition. At this cadence, a therapist can address accumulated muscle tension before it becomes a persistent problem, and most clients notice a meaningful difference in how they feel day to day.

If you sit at a desk for long hours, carry stress in your neck and shoulders, or simply want to stay ahead of tightness before it limits your movement, monthly massage gives your body a consistent reset without requiring a major time or financial commitment.

## More frequent sessions: every two to three weeks

Some healthy people benefit from scheduling every two to three weeks, particularly if they:

- Exercise regularly or train for endurance or strength sports
- Have a physically demanding job
- Experience recurring tension in specific areas such as the lower back, hips, or shoulders
- Are going through a high-stress period at work or in life

At this frequency, a therapist can work progressively on the same areas across sessions, which tends to produce more lasting results than a single monthly visit. Athletes often find that more frequent massage supports faster recovery and better performance. That pattern is covered in more detail in [Why do athletes get massages regularly?](/why-do-athletes-get-massages-regularly).

## Weekly sessions: when they make sense

Weekly massage is not necessary for most healthy people, but it is appropriate in specific situations: recovering from an acute soft-tissue issue, preparing for a major athletic event, or working through a period of unusually high physical or mental stress. Once the acute phase passes, most people step back to a less frequent schedule.

## What happens when you skip massage entirely

There is no rule that says healthy people must get massages. Untreated muscle tension does tend to compound over time. Tight tissue can restrict range of motion, contribute to postural imbalances, and make everyday discomfort feel normal when it does not have to be. [What happens if you never address muscle tension?](/what-happens-if-you-never-address-muscle-tension) walks through what that pattern typically looks like.

## How to decide what frequency is right for you

A few practical questions help narrow it down:

**How do you feel two weeks after a session?** If tension has fully returned and you are back to baseline discomfort, every two weeks is likely a better fit than monthly.

**What is your activity level?** Higher physical output generally means more recovery demand. A recreational runner and a competitive triathlete will have different needs even if both are technically healthy.

**Are you maintaining or resolving something?** Maintenance looks different from targeted work. If you are trying to resolve a specific pattern of tightness, a short run of more frequent sessions followed by a maintenance schedule often works better than spacing sessions out from the start.

**What does your therapist observe?** A licensed therapist can tell you whether tissue is responding between sessions or whether the same areas are resetting to the same state each time. That feedback is one of the most useful inputs for adjusting frequency.

## Starting out

If you have never had regular massage or are returning after a long gap, starting with two sessions in the first month is a reasonable approach. The first session gives your therapist a baseline. The second, two to three weeks later, lets them assess how your body responded and helps you both decide whether monthly, biweekly, or another cadence makes sense going forward.

Healing Hands therapists at both the Brickell and Miami Beach locations tailor each session to your specific needs, so the conversation about frequency is part of the process from the start.
